(KEITH CONGDON stands on a bare stage. He reads a newspaper.
Something offstage attracts his attention; he glances, looks at his
watch, glances off again as if recognizing something, thinks about it,
dismisses it, returns to the paper. CATHY MARTIN hurries on stage,
stops, looks off in the same direction Keith had glanced, looks at her
watch. CATHY can't seem to make a decision. She looks at her watch
again, shrugs a "what the heck" gesture, starts to walk off, past
Keith.)
KEITH: I'd wait if I were you.
CATHY: (Stopping) What?
KEITH: Can't park cars here until six. That's ten minutes from
now. It's your choice, but you might end up paying for it.
CATHY: Oh, but certainly, they wouldn't, I mean, ten minutes??
KEITH: Don't bet on it. I've seen these ticket people slap a
fine on a windshield with thirty seconds to go.
CATHY: No!
KEITH: If you wait, sometimes you can intimidate them, yuh know, the
"be a nice guy" routine, or move your car and hope the space will
be there when you get back.
CATHY: Sounds as though you do this often.
KEITH: It's such a convenient spot for the theater over there. And
I sure can't afford the twenty dollar fine.
CATHY: Oh, you're going to the movie too?
KEITH: Oh, yuh.
CATHY: If you're anything like me, you've seen it before.
KEITH: At least two dozen times. Thank God some theaters still play
the old ones.
CATHY: Yes, aren't they great? It's crazy but, even though I
know how the movie will turn out, I still keep hoping that maybe, just
maybe, this time, the characters will change somehow.
KEITH: Yuh, me too. I know what you mean. I suppose a shrink would
call it escapism, but I try to imagine what it would be like if the
characters didn't make that fatal choice.
CATHY: (With heavy meaning) I know, how well I know. (There is a
silence. The mood has changed to something more serious.)
KEITH: Oh?
