Not So Fast, Madame President! by Lew Osteen
PRESIDENT HELEN HOPE walks into a small room accompanied by
TWO MEN (Or WOMEN or Either): TOMMY TRUST and JOHNNY ABLE
THE SOUND of CHEERING (taped) can be heard
They pause to enjoy it
JOHNNY (OR JANE)
Congratulations, Madam President. The People really love you.
TOMMY (OR TAMMY)
They've been loud before, but not like that.
PRESIDENT HOPE
Thanks. I'm sure they will have plenty of time to learn to feel otherwise.
JOHNNY
I don't think so. I mean the first woman President and the first one
to win 65 per cent of the popular and electorial vote.
TOMMY
... and our party has super majority control of both houses.
JOHNNY
You really pulled it off!
PRESIDENT HOPE
It's flattering, but I hope they will still be with me when I do what
I told them I would do.
JOHNNY
I think they will be.
PRESIDENT HOPE
I hope you are right. I've worked all my life to get this chance to do
what I believe is best for the country.
TOMMY
It was a long campaign. Would you like to rest up?
PRESIDENT HOPE looks around at the small office.
PRESIDENT HOPE
No! I want to get right to work. I'm very anxious to get started on
the de-militarization, Corporate and Financial reform acts ...
JOHNNY
It's been a long day. Maybe you should rest up and go at it tomorrow.
PRESIDENT HOPE
I repeat! I would like to go to the oval office and get to work on the
people's business - now!
TOMMY
Aaahhhmmm! A bug has been detected. We need to wait in this office
until it is cleared.
PRESIDENT HOPE looks doubtful, moves behind A DESK which is empty
except for A LAPTOP that is open. She looks at it and smiles.
PRESIDENT HOPE
Book of Secrets? Really?
TOMMY and JOHNNY do not smile
