The French dramatist Edmond Rostand (1868 1918) is best known for his ever-popular play Cyrano de Bergerac, first performed in 1897. He wrote Les Deux Pierrots (The Two Pierrots) for himself and his friends to perform in 1889. It so impressed the Director of the Comédie-Française that he gave the twenty-two-year-old Rostand his first chance to write for the professional theatre

Thom Christoph, an American who has lived in Germany since 1988, has long been an admirer of Rostand's plays. He has translated three of them into German, including this one: Die Zwei Pierrots oder Das Souper in Weiß, Die Romantiker, and Die Prinzessin in der Ferne.
