Synopsis
The Sum - A Play with Songs
Published by Faber & Faber
Large Mixed Cast
Eve's been doing the maths her whole life
She's always been a sums person, but things have stopped adding up
She's been doing a balancing act between her office job at McClasker's Home Stores and her complicated domestic life
But when the squeeze comes, how do you balance a life that doesn't add up and a family that refuses to read the bottom line?
At work she has to deliver news of cuts to her colleagues
At home she tries to support a mother with dementia
And a teenage daughter who's being bullied at school
And a partner who's just been fired
Nunnery's play with songs contains multiple layers of narrative
It illustrates the cumulative pressures that can build up in a community living under austerity where jobs are on the line and people are approaching breaking point
Premiered at Liverpool Everyman in May 2017
