Sonia Herries - a spinster in her 60s - lives in central London

Her life-long friend Amy Weston 'dances til three - on tables, no less', in her version of the Black Bottom

Sonia's maid, Rose, has become a companion

Sonia's kindness and love of art attract an enigmatic man with insidious relatives and ill-intent
