Fifteen years ago the Haggerts offered asylum to Christopher Bean, a tubercular stranger. He left many paintings most of which where used to patch up leaks in the roof. The only portrait that has been treasured was that of Gwenny, their servant. When strangers turn up announcing that the paintings are worth a fortune, the Haggerts do their best to get hold of the portrait. But Gwenny is Bean's widow, owner of the portrait, and a lot of other pieces she rescued from the fire!
