Two strangers meet on a train: Guy Haines, an architect, and Charles Bruno, a charming but mother-fixated playboy

Because they're strangers they "can say anything they like"

Bruno proposes the perfect murder - he will murder Guy's unfaithful wife, and Guy will murder Bruno's much-hated father

Amused, Guy leaves never imagining that Bruno was serious

But Bruno was serious and when he kills Guy's wife, he expects Guy to fulfil his part of the proposition
