Sir Henry Fitton, Ethne’s husband – a bully, womanizer, supposed
war hero and successful businessman – with a dark secret.

Lady Ethne, his downtrodden wife; Harry, portrait painter, desperately
in love with Ethne

Joyce Cowley, Ethne’s old friend and Henry’s mistress

Aunt Dulcie, spinster aunt, dependent but resentful of Henry’s power

George, his son, keen to marry Betty, who also has a dark secret

And Frank Lucas, supposedly an old war comrade
