Synopsis

Night Train to Bolina

$13

Nilo Cruz

Published by Dramatists Play Service

2 Male 3 Female

The play is set in Latin America in the mid-eighties, in an unidentified country, during the guerilla warfare

Threatened by starvation and abuse, two children flee their rural village for "the city." Dancing on a fine line between innocent fantasy and harsh reality, Mateo and Clara explore their imaginations in a world of dark mysticism and denied love

"Bolina, the place where lost kites go to die, 'is an imaginary country where two peasant children, Mateo and Clara, spin out fantasies to counter the poverty and abuse of their wretched lives

Their bond is complex: sexually charged yet profoundly innocent. The children are unaware of consequences, Mateo lives only for Clara, and she for him. Cruz, a wonderful writer, draws their interwoven souls in language that's simple and poetic without being pretentious" ~ Mercury News
