John McGrath

Published by Nick Hern Books

John McGrath spent his whole life campaigning for a popular theatre that was politically engaged, entertaining and relevant. He campaigned as a writer, a director and as a producer and most famously founded 7:84, a theatre company named after the statistic that announced that 7% of the population owns 84% of the nation¹s wealth

Naked Thoughts That Roam About is a selection of McGrath¹s writings on theatre spanning a forty year period. The volume includes essays, lectures, interviews, reviews, company documents, programme notes, letters and poems. The pieces range from Notes on a Theatre, written during his undergraduate days, to Theatre and Democracy from 1999

McGrath was actively involved in the selection of material to be included and has provided a contextualising commentary throughout the book. He put the final touches to it just before his death from leukaemia in January 2002

In Michael Billington's words - 'Committed to the idea of art as popular, relevant and politically engaged, McGrath devoted his life to that cause... his prose-style, like the man himself, is ebullient, provocative and, above all, life-enhancing.'
