Auschwitz survivor Joseph Kreitz lives in comfortable retirement with his daughter and granddaughter in their city apartment somewhere in the United States. One day when he is alone, William, his servant, brings him a letter in which Franz Riedel, an ex-SS sergeant, requests an interview. Though William has been ordered never to let strangers into the apartment, Joseph insists and the meeting between Kreitz and Riedel after fifty years leads to a dramatic climax involving all the characters.
